Budget

A scholarship of the amount of 40,000$ will be granted for the 2011-2012 year.
Time period

The scholarship will start in September 2011 and will cover the 2011-2012 scholar years.

Eligibility

• Submit a research proposal relevant to the prevention of suicide;
• Be a member of the Ordre des infirmiers et infirmières du Québec (OIIQ);
• Be registered in a PhD program at a Quebec institution in nursing science or clinical science, and be supervised by a nursing science teacher;

The focus of the IMPRS for Neural Circuits will be the understanding of neural circuits (from the simple to the large and complex), at all scales required to achieve this understanding. This ambitious objective will require analysis at the molecular, cellular, multi-cellular, network and behavioral levels, with the full understanding that macroscopic phenomena (spatial patterns, dynamics) can be scale-dependent, and that reductionism is not always sufficient as a method.

PhD Journalism Scholarship Student in Mineral Processing

At Luleå University of Technology the CAMM – Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (www.camm.se) has recently been established, based on funds from the Swedish government within the strategic area Sustainable use of natural resources: mining and minerals. One of the CAMM workpackages is dedicated to the emerging field of geometallurgy.

Geometallurgy brings together geological sciences, mineral processing and metallurgy in order to characterize the properties of rocks and ore from the in-situ ore stage through extraction and beneficiation stages to the final product. This is done through ore characterization, geostatistics and laboratory testing to create a spatially-based predictive model for simulation. The aim is to maximize resource utilization, optimize processes and reduce the economic risk.

We are looking for a PhD student in Mineral Processing with an emphasis on comminution. The student will work in a project aiming on the development of ore characterization methods for forecasting the comminution behaviour of an ore with respect to mineral liberation, throughput and energy demands. Results from experimental work shall be analyzed and used within the scope of geometallurgical modelling to provide a data base for predicting mineral processing performance and mine planning thereby considering the geological variability of the ore body.

This project is part of the geometallurgy work package of the CAMM.

Mineral processing (http://www.ltu.se/tkg/avd/kgm?l=en) belongs to the Division of Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering, being part of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering with about 280 employees. As a PhD student, you will be involved in teaching in mineral processing related study programmes.

Two PhD Positions in Experimental Microbial Ecology, Switzerland

Research objectives are to better understand why cross-feeding sometimes occurs within microbial communities and how cross-feeding can promote diversity within these communities. Denitrification of nitrate to nitrogen gas is used as a model cross-feeding pathway, which has important implications for water quality, air quality, and global warming. The research projects are expected to improve our mechanistic understanding of how microbial communities assemble together.

The PhD positions will largely focus on experimental work, but may incorporate theoretical components as well. The projects will require the development of expertise in experimental microbiology, microbial ecology, and microbial evolution. Both positions will begin January 1st, 2011, but this is to some degree negotiable.

A successful applicant will have an MSc degree or equivalent in environmental or biological sciences. The applicant should have a working knowledge of microbiology, ecology, and evolution. The applicant must be able to conduct research independently and to communicate in English.

Among other lines of research, the role of ascorbate and ascorbate metabolism in plants is addressed in the laboratory. The current project focuses on the physiological and biochemical analysis of putative Arabidopsis mutants in ascorbate metabolism. Experience with molecular (e.g. micro arrays) and biochemical approaches (enzymology, HPLC) are significant advantages.

Your task:

You will be in charge of a limited teaching and training task in the department of Biology, in particular within the research group Molecular Plant Physiology and Biotechnology (MPPB). These include a minimal participation in practical courses, individual research projects and master projects.
Within this framework you apply for competitive extramural research funding.
Your research includes the analyses of Arabidopsis thaliana mutants, mutated in a protein putatively involved in ascorbate metabolism. Experimental approaches include quantitative biochemical analyses (e.g. metabolite chromatography, HPLC, Elisa); molecular analyses (e.g. micro arrays, crossings) and physiological analyses (biomass production, stress responsiveness) of the available mutants.

Your profile:

You have a PhD degree in Biology, bio-enginering or Biochemistry.
You have considerable laboratory experience, in particular in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Your research and teaching abilities are consistent with the directives of the University of Antwerp.
You are comfortable working in a multidisciplinary research team.

We offer:

A postdoctoral fellowship for an initial period of one year, extendable pending research funding.
The earliest start date is March 1, 2010.
